What makes a high chair suitable for Baby Led Weaning and messy babies?
First and most importantly: it has to be easy to clean. I can’t remark this enough! You’d probably regret getting a very nice high chair with lovely knitted patterns. If you’re ready to put the knitted cover in the washing machine pretty much every day, then go for it! Otherwise, seriously, easy to clean is what you’d love.
It has to be comfortable. Because baby led weaning is about exploring and learning, we don’t have any rush at mealtimes. It’s a fun and enjoyable (yes – and messy too!) experience. Babies will spend hours a day in their high chair, so we want them to be comfortable.
A high chair they can grow with is ideal to save money, of course! But the baby will also become familiar with that high chair. If we keep changing the high chair often because they grow out of it, they have to get used to the new one from scratch again.

#1 IKEA Antilop High Chair
We love the IKEA Antilop High Chair (UK link / US link). It is SO easy to clean on top of being very affordable. The tray is removable, so you can decide whether to put it and place baby’s plate in it, or remove it and have baby’s plate in the same table as yours.
For babies that are just over 6 months old, you might want to use the inflatable cushion so the baby fits in more snuggled. This is the cushion (UK link / US link) and this is the cover (UK link / US link). Eventually they don’t need the cushion anymore but we found it so helpful to support and make our little one more comfortable at the beginning. The cushion is also very easy to clean.
Disadvantages of the IKEA high chair are two main ones, in my opinion. It does not have footrest (always preferrable to have it, right?), and the maximum weight is just 15kg.
#2 Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair
What we love most about the Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair is the quality of the material. Good wood, lovely natural colours, smooth finishing. They last many years because they adapt as the little ones grow. They say it’s “a chair for life” because even adults can use it. From the baby led weaning point of view, the optional Tray comes in really handy and it’s very easy to clean.
The main disadvantage is the price. It also needs extra sets (bought separately) when the baby is young so they fit properly. So, for a 6 month old baby, you will need the Baby Set. With this set babies can use the high chair comfortably while their back is well supported. There is also a Baby Cushion to insert in the Baby Set.
There is also a newborn set if you want to use the Tripp Trapp from birth. Again, all these bits are sold separately so it can end up being quite expensive. But to be fair, the quality is very good, so if someone wants to give a really useful and long-lasting gift to your little one or you have the money, it’s worth it.

#3 Joie Mimzy Snacker High Chair
The Joie Mimzy Snacker high chair is handy because it can be folded away when not in use. The tray is dishwasher-safe, and all the pieces can be easily cleaned. The tray is also removable, if you prefer to have the little one joining you at the same table. The padded seat is also very comfortable for little ones, very important when they spend time exploring and learning about food to make the whole experience a positive one.
We really like Joie products such as car seats and pushchairs, and this high chair is another proof of their good quality.
#4 Oxo Tot Seedling High Chair
The OXO Tot Seedling high chair is sturdy with a neat design. It’s a good choice for baby led weaning babies since it’s easy to clean, it can be wiped down and the tray cover is dishwasher safe. Another good point about the tray is that it can be removed with just one hand (how many times we hold our babies and try to do 300 other things at the same time?!). We also like the seat: it’s padded and comfy, and the cushion is removable too if you want to deep clean it. An important advantage is that it does not need extra accessories (e.g. cushions, trays, etc) like other high chairs.
On the negative side, the high chair is quite big and heavy. If you don’t have too much space in your living room it’s probably not the best choice. Otherwise, one of the best high chairs for baby led weaning!
#5 Mamas & Papas Snax Adjustable Highchair
The Mamas & Papas Snax high chair is also foldable and the tray can be removed to be stored away. It has a storage basket under the chair to keep things close when needed. It’s a good choice for BLW because it can be wiped down without problems and it has a comfortable padded seat.
A negative point of this high chair is that the maximum weight is 15kg, which for some kids might be around 3 years but if your little one is big as my little one, that weight is reached by 2 years and a half. Also, the quality is not as great as the previous four high chairs.
